Reclaiming the Right to Farm

Our Story

"Rehabilitating abandoned land and bringing it back into agricultural production."

MacIsaac Highland is a pre-industrial hill farm in the uplands of Corinth, Vermont. Since 1981, our family has bred registered Scottish Highland cattle while rehabilitating abandoned land and bringing it back into agricultural production.

Vermont once had far more farmland. We work to demonstrate practical ways to convert unmanaged land into new productive working landscapes, supporting local food security and the state's agricultural potential.

Our approach stays close to traditional methods: structures built by hand from local stone and rough-sawn timber, intermittent electricity, wood heat, and gravity-fed water. Our Highland cattle thrive on remote pastures, producing hardy breeding stock suited to Vermont's terrain.

Improving the Breed

Registered Highland Cattle

Why Highland Cattle

Highland cattle are the ideal choice for low-input farming. Renowned for their exceptional hardiness, they thrive on marginal land, rough forage, and harsh weather—perfect for Vermont's hilly uplands and variable climate. Their gentle, even temperament, developed through consistent early handling, makes them easy to manage. They excel at calving with minimal intervention, produce lean, flavorful, grass-finished beef, and require far less supplemental feed, veterinary care, or infrastructure than many commercial breeds.

Driving Horses

This land has layered histories across two centuries—four successive homesteads, ancient roads linking a long-gone Norwegian commune, primitive homesteads, and the ruins of the three-story Maplewood Hotel, a popular early-20th-century destination spa with a bowling alley and outdoor pool.

Vestiges of generations past are everywhere. Explore by carriage or sleigh behind our working horses—a deeply unhurried, irreplaceable way to travel through time and terrain.
